Goodnotes Education is Free for Schools - FAQs

Why is Goodnotes Education going free?

Goodnotes was founded by our CEO, Steven Chan, to support his studies, meaning education has always been at our core. By making Goodnotes Education free for K-12 schools, we're accelerating our impact and making our solution as accessible as possible to young learners.

We know that Goodnotes users often carry the app with them from school through university and into their working lives. By removing the cost barrier for schools, we can reach even more young people and give them a tool that will support them throughout their journey.

What do I need to be eligible?

Any K-12 school can use Goodnotes Education for free; you can apply as long as you are authorized to do so by your institution. We have two versions of Goodnotes Education based on whether or not you're able to set up an Admin Console. If you are, you can enjoy enhanced, pedagogy-backed features. Fill out this form and we'll let you know which one you're eligible for.

Can I expect the same level of support and investment?

Yes. From building innovative new features to maintaining stability and providing support, we're committed to continuing to invest in making Goodnotes Education a powerful, accessible solution.

Wasn’t there always a free version of Goodnotes for schools?

Yes, we've always offered our consumer-facing app to schools for free, which is known as Goodnotes Education (without Admin Console). Our version with Admin Console has enhanced, pedagogy-backed features, and until now has been a paid upgrade. Now schools can access it for free too!

What’s included in Goodnotes Education?

All the features you know and love are included in Goodnotes Education: AI answer clustering and grading, class navigator for 1:1 real-time student visibility, assessment and feedback capabilities, and seamless document distribution. You can see more here.

There are two areas with some additional guidelines:

AI usage

We care deeply about responsible and sustainable use of AI, so some limits may exist to ensure it's used thoughtfully.

If you're using Goodnotes Education, you won't be able to access these consumer-facing Goodnotes features:

  • AI Q&A tool
  • AI Math Assist
  • Content generation
  • Co-editing
  • AI summaries and AI-enhanced meeting minutes

Instead, we have education-specific AI tools, which we're excited to continue developing for schools. As the AI landscape continues to evolve, we'll clearly communicate any limits as these features are introduced.

Storage

As we expand support to additional platforms such as Android, there are some unknowns around storage requirements. This may mean introducing sensible limits to ensure reliability and performance for everyone. If limits ever apply, we expect they will be generous enough to support everyday teaching and learning (and you would always be informed well in advance and before anything affects day-to-day use).
