Create your first Notebook or Lesson

This article covers some Goodnotes Education Plan features. Free Tier users may not have access to these functionalities. To upgrade, contact your institution's IT administrator.

Goodnotes is made up of documents called Notebooks. When you create and share a document with your Class in Goodnotes Education, it becomes a Lesson. The key difference is that Lessons are shared with Students, while Notebooks remain in your personal library. When you share a Lesson, you own the master version and can see each Student's copy along with their annotations and answers.

What is a Lesson?

Lessons are a feature of the Education Plan only.

A Lesson is a document owned by a Teacher and shared with all Students in a Class Folder. Students receive their own copy of the Lesson where they can annotate and answer questions without affecting the original document or seeing their peers' work.

As a Teacher, you can view all your Students' versions of the Lesson and even write in them without affecting your original version or the other Students versions.

Create a New Notebook or Lesson

To create a new Lesson, navigate to one of these locations in the Library View:

Documents Tab: Creating a document here keeps it private until you're ready to share it with your Class. This is referred to as a Notebook.

Class Folder Tab: Creating a document here automatically shares it with all Students enrolled in the Class. These are referred to as Lessons. If you haven't created a Class Folder yet, learn more here: Create your First Class Folder.

Once you're in either view:

  1. Tap the New + icon in the top left
  2. Choose an option to create your document, import a file, or create a new folder

If you import a document, browse your Files in the Share Sheet and tap Done to import.
